IOWA-FATAL I-80 ACCIDENT
2 killed while walking on I-80 in Iowa
LE CLAIRE, Iowa (AP) - Authorities say two people walking away
from a stuck car were killed after they were hit by another car on
Interstate 80 in eastern Iowa.
The Iowa State Patrol says the accident happened late Thursday
near Le Claire.
According to the patrol, the car was stuck in the median of
I-80. Two people, a male and a female, were walking away from the
car when they were hit by another car just before midnight.
Their names have not been released pending notification of
family.
The accident remains under investigation.
IOWA-SWEPT AWAY
Iowa girl swept away by flood waters
NEW HAMPTON, Iowa (AP) - Officials say a 13-year-old girl is
recovering after she was swept away by flood waters in rural Alta
Vista in northeast Iowa.
The Chickasaw County sheriff's office says the teenager had
gotten off a school activity bus Thursday night. Instead of walking
home along a road, she took a short cut across a field and was
swept away.
Officials say she went through a culvert before she managed to
get out of the water. She went to a nearby farmhouse for help.
The sheriff's office says the teen was taken to a hospital and
treated for minor injuries and possible hypothermia and released.
The girl was not identified.
KOSHER SLAUGHTERHOUSE-DEPORTATIONS
Former Iowa workers to pay for deportation
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - Immigration officials say 37 former
workers at an Iowa kosher slaughterhouse who are being deported by
the end of the month will have to pay their own way home.
Immigration Customs and Enforcement spokesman Greg Palmore says
those being deported where told several weeks ago so they would
have time to make arrangements. Palmore says if they have a
hardship and can't pay their own way, immigration will consider the
issue.
The 37 were among nearly 400 people arrested in an immigration
raid at the Agriprocessors plant in Postville in May 2008. They
must pay their own way home because they are not in immigration
custody.
FAKE CASH
Really bad bogus bills seized in Iowa
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Des Moines police say some counterfeit
money showing up in the area isn't just bad - it's really bad.
More than $6,000 in fake cash has been seized so far. Detectives
on Thursday said some of the bogus bills contained printing errors
never intended for circulation.
The counterfeit money was made by bleaching $5 bills and
printing $100 on the bleached paper.
A weak image of Abraham Lincoln can been seen on a fake $100
that covered only half the sheet. A $100 bill had Ben Franklin on
both sides.
Investigators say the bills weren't thrown away because they
could be bleached again.
Three people have been arrested in the alleged forgery ring.
They have not been charged with manufacturing the money, but with
passing it.
CF INDUSTRIES-TERRA
After months, CF makes deal official with Terra
NEW YORK (AP) - After months of battles and hostile bids, CF
Industries is getting its prize.
CF Industries Holdings Inc. said Friday it has agreed to buy
Terra Industries Inc. for about $4.7 billion.
The deal has been approved by both companies' boards.
Terra said it has officially ended its previously announced deal
with Norway's Yara International. That offer was valued at $4.1
billion.
Terra, based in Sioux City, Iowa, had repeatedly rejected CF's
previous offers. CF had vowed to end its hostile bids, but went
back on the offensive after Terra agreed to Yara's deal.
