WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama is heading to Minnesota to rally support from the public and law enforcement community for his calls to ban assault weapons and require universal background checks. Obama will visit the Minneapolis Police Department’s Special Operations Center today. The trip marks the first time Obama is campaigning on his anti-gun violence agenda outside of Washington.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak says a new Minnesota Vikings stadium puts the city in a position to host another Super Bowl. Rybak says Minneapolis put on a great show for the Super Bowl in 1992, and a new stadium would make the experience even better the second time around. An announcement on which city will get the 2018 Super Bowl won’t be made until the spring of 2014.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – A series of workshops across Minnesota will encourage school and other cafeterias to serve more locally grown food. The eight workshops begin today and run through April. Stephanie Heim of the University of Minnesota Extension Service tells Minnesota Public Radio that one challenge for food service directors is figuring out which farmers they want to sell to them wholesale.

MACON, Ga. (AP) – Four airlines are vying for the chance to provide passenger flights from the airport in Macon, Ga., to Atlanta and possibly other cities. Officials say the lowest bid came from Minneapolis-based Sovereign Air Inc. The airline proposes round-trip flights from Macon to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
