Memorial Fundraiser
There is a great project going on in Waterloo in memory of the two girls abducted last summer (Lyric and Elizabeth).
The community is pulling together to construct a memorial at Meyer’s Lake. A memorial fund has been established and several events are being planned this year. All proceeds are going to the memorial. I would like to keep spreading the word of this project to our community as their disappearance really struck a chord with most parents of young kids. Please check out their Facebook pages to learn more about how you can help and please continue to pass this information along to others throughout the community and state.
Angels Park Memorial Island of Evansdale: A community project honoring and inspired by Elizabeth Collins and Lyric Morrissey and their tragic passing after abduction. The entire island will be a memorial in which a great piece will be for the cousins.

WINNEBAGO COUNTY CONSERVATION BOARD NEWS RELEASE by Lisa Ralls, Winnebago County Naturalist
RE: Wilderness Camping Program Scheduled
Have you ever thought it would be nice to get away for a few days, completely away from schedules and technology, from crowds and stress? A wilderness camping trip can do just that. And, to help you plan for just such a trip, the Winnebago County Conservation Board will be hosting a program entitled Wilderness Camping on Wednesday evening, June 5th. It will be held at the Thorpe Park office, five miles west of Forest City, beginning at 7:00 PM, and lasting about an hour.
During the presentation, Winnebago County Naturalist Lisa Ralls will help people learn how to plan for a wilderness trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area of northern Minnesota. She will discuss what rules and regulations need to be met, what permits people need, what equipment and skills are needed, just what to expect in the wilderness, and how to stay safe. She will also answer any questions people may have and handouts will be available for people to take home with them.
Many people think a wilderness camping trip would be too difficult for them, but it doesn’t have to be tough; traveling in the wilderness can be as hard or as easy as you make it. And knowing what to expect and being prepared can make even that first trip relaxing and fun. So, although the presentation will be open to anyone, it will be geared towards people that have had limited experience traveling and camping in the wilderness, so that they, too, may enjoy the true wilderness experience!
The WCCB’s Wilderness Camping program will be free and open to the public and no preregistration is needed. For more information on the program, people can contact Lisa Ralls at 641-565-3390 or at lralls@winnebagoccb.com.
Walk and 5K Fun Run for Juvenile Huntington’s Disease
Inspired to help their sister and friend, two local college students are hosting a Walk and 5K Fun Run on Saturday June 8 to support families affected by Juvenile Huntington’s Disease.
Alyssa Gagnon and Megan Mahaffey, both of Clear Lake, are hosting the event in honor of Megan’s sister, Whitney Mahaffey, who is battling Juvenile Huntington’s Disease. This is one proactive way to “do something to make a difference” for Whitney, noted her parents Michael and Amy Mahaffey of Clear Lake. “They realize they can’t change Whitney’s situation, but through raising money for research they can help bring about a cure for Huntington’s Disease.”
There is no cure and no direct treatment for the disease.
Before Whitney’s diagnosis, the three girls rode horses, participated in trail riding and enjoyed competing in local 4H shows together. As Whitney grew older, school work grew progressively more difficult. Even participating in gym class became a challenge. A blood test at the University of Iowa revealed the JHD diagnosis when she was 15 years old.
Registration may be done on-line at www.hdsa.org/thwia or at 9 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, 205 West 10th Avenue North in Clear Lake on June 8. Adult registration is $20; children 12 and under $10 and children 5 years and under are free. The Walk and 5K Fun Run begins at 10 a.m. People are encouraged to create a team and fundraise using this secure online website.
All proceeds go to the Iowa Chapter of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America.
JHD is a form of Huntington’s Disease that affects children and teenagers and is comparable to late stage Alzheimer disease. It is a fatal, hereditary, degenerative brain disorder that results in loss of cognitive, behavioral and physical control. There is no cure. It slowly diminishes the affected individual’s ability to walk, think, talk and reason.
Fewer than 10 percent of individuals with HD develop symptoms before age 20. Because it is uncommon and differs from the adult onset, juvenile onset HD presents unique challenges to the individual, their caregivers and professionals who are helping them.
